WHO DO YOU TRUST?
Scripture Reading: Psalms 118:1-14
It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. - Psalms 118:8
Bungee jumping is an adventurous sport in which people jump from a higher ground with an elastic rope tied to their ankles. The ultimate experience is at the Victoria Falls where jumpers take the over 100-meter plunge towards the raging torrents of the mighty Zambezi River. At the count of five, they jump off into “no man's land" until the rope stretches to its limits just above the raging waters and the jumper bounces back up.
Why would anyone voluntarily jump from such a precarious height and shriek in delight while cameras take pictures and onlookers applaud? The answer is simple - TRUST: trust in the tensility of a rope and in a system that has been tested and proven over time.
Everybody trusts something. Trust is a firm belief in the reliability, truth, or ability of someone or something. Trust connotes faith or conviction. What is your greatest source of confidence? Is it your family name, education, beauty, wealth or estate? Are you buoyed up by the assurance that you are connected to the right people? Great as all these may be, even the most fool-proof human system can falter when you need it the most.
That is why Jeremiah 17:5 warns, “Thus says the LORD: ‘Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the LORD.'” Instead of trusting in fleeting things that can fail, put your trust in God. A rope, such as the bungee rope, may accidentally break one day but our God will never let you fall. He is unchangeable and unshakeable.
Prayer: Father, in you alone do I put my trust. I refuse to put my confidence in men or human institutions that can fail.
