DREAMING ON A STONE
Scripture Reading: Genesis 28:10-22
So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. - Genesis 28:11
As Jacob fled from Esau's wrath, he came to a place you would typically call rock-bottom. The sun had set, figuratively signalling a dark phase or night season of his life. He was travelling alone in the wilderness with nowhere to sleep and using a stone as a makeshift pillow. In that uncomfortable position, no one would expect an inspiring dream. But Jacob experienced a visitation from God, who assured him of His presence and of success on his life's journey. Inspired by the heavenly presence, Jacob built an altar and renamed the place 'Bethel' or 'house of God.'
Today, you may also be at your lowest ebb. You may be running from past mistakes. Your greatest fears may be eroding your peace. Your debts may be threatening your family plans. A jobless situation may be getting out of hand. Time may be against you. You may be improvising to meet basic needs. You are the perfect candidate for God's visitation.
God's word to Jacob in verse 15 is also for you, "Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you." May the assurance of God's presence and help strengthen you on your life's journey. May you experience a heavenly visitation in the place where you are experiencing pain, shame and uncertainty.
Prayer: Lord, I thank You that my current circumstances are not my final point. I embrace the assurance of Your continuous presence on my journey.
