POSITIONING A LEADERSHIP TEAM
Scripture Reading: Exodus 17:8-16
But Moses' hands became heavy; so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. - Exodus 17:12
Raising a leadership team requires assigning diverse roles and I\responsibilities. The story of the Amalekite victory featured different contributors, each of whom was indispensable. There are unique dynamics that must be understood and appreciated. The older leader, Moses, took a strategic position at the top providing direction and overseeing the entire spectrum of the battle. He retained two executive assistants, Aaron and Hur, close by to hold his hands up and provide tactical support for his spiritual and strategic role.
The responsibility for operational leadership and directing the execution fell to the younger soldier, Joshua, who performed it with excellence. Joshua could easily assume he did all the work but the truth is if Aaron or Hur had gotten tired and Moses' hands had fallen, an enemy soldier could easily have killed him.
Similarly, Aaron and Hur could easily have an over-bloated sense of their own importance; however, they also needed to appreciate that without Joshua, whatever strategy they had could not have been executed. Finally each contributor had to admit that they needed the overall leadership of Moses to hold the rod of God and provide spiritual and strategic oversight. Every team needs its own Moses, Aaron, Hur and Joshua to appreciate and excel in their designated roles.
Prayer: Lord, grant me the grace to shine in whatever role I find myself. Help me to also appreciate the roles and contributions of others.
