[January 24] AN UNWISE BUT COMMON CHOICE

AN UNWISE BUT COMMON CHOICE
Scripture Reading: Genesis 13:1-18
"Is not the whole land before you? Please separate from me. If you take the left, then I will go to the right; or, if you go to the right, then I will go to the left." - Genesis 13:10
Some relationships are lifelong gifts from God meant to be preserved AT ALL COSTS. Everyone has a destiny connector who is key to your future. Lot's progress was directly linked to Abraham. Abraham was the one God called and blessed but he chose to take his nephew with him. And yet when Lot prospered and his staff started fighting over resources with Abraham's staff, he failed to call them to order. The tension threatened to boil over.
Abraham then made a peace proposal to Lot which could pass for a test. He asked Lot to choose the part of the land he wanted so he Abraham would move in the other direction. This was an ideal time for Lot to immediately apologise and defer to Abraham's leadership. Even if they were to go their separate ways, wasn't it more prudent for the carrier of the blessing to choose first? But Lot failed the test woefully. Genesis 13:10 says he lifted his eyes, saw the well watered plain of the Jordan. Lot therefore chose first and moved on.
Lot preferred immediate wealth to a long-term, divinely-ordained relationship. Interestingly, after the separation, God blessed Abraham even more. As for Lot, he ended up in trouble and it took Abraham to save him. Next time you're faced with a similar choice, don't only consider "well-watered plains"; place value on the blessing of precious relationships.

Prayer: Help me, Lord, to look beyond immediate gain and to place a greater value on more beneficial and eternal things.
