[March 14] THE THREE TENSES OF SALVATION

NUMBERING OUR DAYS
Scripture Reading: Psalm 90:1-17
So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. - Psalm 90:12
This Scripture is about purpose, perspective and time management. It is possible to run about everyday without a sense of why we are here and what our biggest priorities in life should be. Life is fleeting and it is important for each of us to carefully consider the purpose for which God placed us here and apply ourselves to its fulfilment.
Moses urged us to count our days in order to gain a heart of wisdom. The Psalmist reminds us that our lifespan is often 70 years or about 80 years. Without this consciousness, when you assume that you have unlimited time, you can dissipate your time, energy and resources on unproductive ventures. However, the heart of wisdom gives you a better appreciation of life and a commitment to account for each single day. Wisdom makes us count the years, months, weeks and days and utilise each of them judiciously or wisely. It also means daily, weekly or monthly review to give account of our stewardship of time. No day is left to go waste.
The heart of wisdom also makes us more urgent and purposeful. Jesus stressed how the awareness of our mortality should create in us a sense of urgency. In John 9:4 He said, "I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work." This was a reminder that each of us has a limited time to execute the specific assignment given to us by God. We must therefore work diligently on it within the time we have, mindful of the fact that a time will come, which he calls the night, when no one can work.
Prayer: Lord, help me to live a fruitful and productive life each day.
